I started out in B2B marketing in the late '80's as Head of Direct Marketing for Pitney Bowes who were in the vanguard of using technology to understand, segment and service their markets worldwide. I established the UK as the centre of corporate excellence in using data driven relationship marketing and using the internet in its early form to manage the supply chain. I was subsequently invited to 'work my magic' across EMEA as Head of Relationship Marketing and Strategy. As a result I was headhunted to lead NatWest's Customer Development and Value Management operation for over 8 million customers, creating both the technology infrastructure and analytics skillset. In 1996 I jumped at the opportunity to join American Express as Vice President of Customer Information Management for EMEA. For four years, we revolutionised the way that we used data to analyse, profile and segment new customer acquisition and drive loyalty marketing programmes across international markets. We also invested heavily in internet start-ups at that time, acquiring their ideas and toolsets to use ourselves and learn about the brave new world of digital.
After that, I joined Ogilvy One (my agency at AmEx) as a Senior Consultant with clients that included IBM, RBS, Standard Life, Yorkshire Water, BT, Royal Mai. I analysed how they were using data and technology to manage customer experience and profitability, making recommendations for change and also project managing some of those initative including training and mentoring their in-house teams.
I was invited to join Credit Suisse Private Banking to lead their customer experience programme and rationalise their marketing operations as part of a corporate rebrand and reorganisation.
In 2003, I set up as an independent - freelance consuting, lecturing and working as an interim Marketing Director - always introducing and integrating the latest in digital and, more recently, social media marketing into the integrated marketing mix. My clients range from large organisations such as PwC to smaller challenger brands such as Thomsons Online Benefits and The Student Room Group.
In what is laughingly called my spare time, I founded and run two website portals that specialise in careers advice - newlifenetwork.co.uk (2005) and mygraduatecareer.com (2010). I write and publish a number of books and guides on how to manage careers and job hunting efforts online and how to use social media in B2B for business development purposes.
Education and Qualifications
I have a BA (Hons) in Marketing, acquired many years ago and I have been on more courses than I can remember. In truth, I've always found that the best education is to be involved in working in marketing every day, working and networking with passionate people who are interested in new ideas and enjoy making a positive difference to their brands and their customers.
