    Hi there,

I'm pretty new to SEO (by most peoples standards) and have been given website to optimise. The client provides a huge range of very differing services, meaning there are 3 tiers of navigation including these services - with a page for each service.

So i suppose the question is - how do i optimise the homepage adequately to cover the huge range of services, bearing in mind that ive optimised the landing pages with very targetted keywords?

Should homepage keywords for SEO take precedence over other pages?

any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi there,

Personally, I would recommend that you place footer links at the bottom of the homepage for each to the services you offer - which also include sub links into the key pages within that section.

An example, which I would give is something like www.halifax.co.uk

    Main Section: Mortgages

Subsection: First Time buyers, Remortgage etc

The inclusion of footer links, allows for search engines to find the key pages easier also.

    Regards,

    R

It is difficult to comment on your specific case without knowing the site in question but IF you have successfully managed to optimise the internal pages and do rank well for the specific keywords that are relevant to each section, then you don't strictly need to worry too much about the homepage as users will land on the most appropriate pages.

It does introduce the consideration that internal category pages may well be the first point of contact so you need to think about how to welcome the user and introduce the business, but it sounds as though the homepage will serve only as an umbrella page to fairly different service pages.

It is rare for there not to be some form of fairly generic top level keywords that may be suitable for the homepage but they are typically fairly competitive and often fairly vague.

A well optimised page will always be very focused on a particular theme. If a page is really only an introduction and a conduit to more specific pages, you are probably going to struggle to rank for a wide range of phrases.

As long as the internal pages are doing well, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Thank you both so much for your advice, feeling much more positive about the project now.
