    I am trying to get traffic to my site and while reading few post and article on how to draw traffic, I learned that social bookmarking sites can get instant traffic. I need your suggestion whether I should start spending some time on sites like digg, reddit etc. and will they solve my purpose?

    Hi Katie, I run seminars and recently I undertook one for retailers and had the very same questions put to me.  You have to understand where you audience exists and then get in front of them.  Many people are using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, but you are right to look at ones like Digg and reddit.  These are ones you should be sharing your links out to as it will essentially act like a linking strategy, but to be effective you need to make sure it is worthwhile content and that you "seed" it correctly and not spam people with information that they will not be interested in.

    Hi Katie,

    I think it really depends on what you're trying to achieve. I have been speaking to a load of content publishers recently (those with magazines & websites) - they're opinion on this is that the social bookmarking lot don't drive valuable traffic - ie people come to their site to look at one article and then leave again. Making the ad performance poor as no-one's clicking on their banners. Their mission is to increase number and effectiveness of ad impressions, yours might be different.

    If your content is related to a business vertical, there are probably better ways to spend your time getting exposure than Digg. It all starts with cracking content. If you write something interesting, seed it out across all the channels as Paul says making sure you target the people/channels where your audience hangs out. If the quality of the info you spread is good, then you'll have a loyal following and start being quoted and linked to in others' posts.

    Yes, bookmarking sites can prove very beneficial for your sites. I was reading in this article that Articles / websites voted up to the frontpage usually receive a great deal of traffic and can easily see over 10,000 visitors within the span of a day.

    One way to drive traffic to your site that represents better value is through Twitter.

    Twitter has been highly successful for me and enables me to absorb all the industry news I want to see. However, if you're using networks like Twitter, you have to ensure that you have an effective marketing strategy in place.

    Also it seems to me that the effectiveness of places like Digg and Reddit is decreasing as the big sites such as Facebook and Twitter continue to expand. Therefore I would suggest spending less time on these sites if it is corporate content you are promoting.

    In response to @Tom Lindridge...

    I believe your objective is customer acquisition? In which case I am not sure that Tom's views on Twitter are the right strategy. Tom is right that Twitter is a great way to engage your audience but if I understand your situation you are trying to acquire in which case Twitter is not a great choice in my mind.
