I'm trying to decide on the best strategy for implementing Online Marketing for our website WhichLaptop.co.uk.
I'm not sure whether to employ somebody full time or outsource to an agency. Third option is to learn myself which i'm confident i can become proficient in as i have a basic knowledge but as MD i don't know if i can dedicate enough time to it with running the company on a daily basis.
It's certainly worth you learning more about digital marketing even if you don't end up doing it full time. If you know more then you'll hire someone better / get more out of them, or you'll manage/drive your agency better.
If you learn more you'll probably also be clearer about what you actually need, either from a hire or from an agency. If you just need some search marketing done, for example, you might be able to outsource. If you are going to hire then do you need someone senior/experienced or just a 'do-er' who can execute on your strategy?
If you want to learn more then obviously I'd recommend our training courses. The 2 day Fast Track Digital Marketing (see http://ecly.co/dNZM1F) is a great way to learn about all the major digital marketing disciplines.

Hi Ashley
Thanks for your reply. I have actually applied for the MSc in Digital Marketing you offer with Manchester University.
I am keen to learn about Digital Marketing and i take your comments on board. With regards to outsourcing or Inhouse, it can be cheaper to outsource to an agency and but on average prices quoted are £500 p/m which is equivalent to 1 days work per month. A full time person would be more expensive but work out less per hour as i would be getting 40 hours per week from them.
I've been trying to decide for a weeks now and gone back and forth but i really do need to make a decision either way.
Why don't you just outsource for a while and then consider hiring? The benefit of outsourcing, of course, is that you can easily stop it.

Hi Ashley
Yes that's just i've decided before you sent the reply (i think so anyway ! haha)
I'm going to use one of the recommended agencies on your reports, i've spoken to Impact Media Ltd yesterday and was particularly impressed with how they dealt with my questions.
Thanks for all your help, hopefully i'll also get accepted on the Digital Marketing course as i fully agree that it can only be in my best interest to further my knowledge of the subject as i do see my future starting other online businesses in the future.
I would just like to add that i think your site is an excellent source of information.
Our second Digital Cream Dubai event on 21 February 2012 brought together 130 regional senior client-side marketers for an intense day of knowledge sharing on online marketing and e-commerce.
Econsultancy CEO Ashley Friedlein presented the findings from Econsultancy's State of Digital in MENA 2012 report, looking at current trends in the Middle East and North Africa.
This 57-slide presentation was compiled by Peter Abraham, Exec VP EMEA & Asia at Econsultancy. In this presentation Peter looks at trends that are on the increase in digital marketing and how many of them are interrelated.
