Hi, looking at web stats and traffic sources, can anyone explain what for example the difference between google/organic and google.co.uk/referral is. Obviously one came from an organic search result and the other one trhough a referral, but what I don't quite understand is where the referrals would have come from (especially as we don't do ppc)? Thanks very much.

Referrals are not necessarily from google.  They can be from any site (but the list may also include google).  ie. referral = traffic/visit source

Feel free to contact me if you need further clarification.

Agree with Denis depending on which tool you are using for your stats you should be able to get a break down of all your traffic to your site.  Through natural you will have Search (either paid or non paid), direct - people coming directly to your site and referred - people who have found your site via a link.  Referrers can be any other source where your site has been mentioned.

Please come back to me if you need any more clarification.

Thanks very much both! I am still slightly in the dark and would like to ask again, please.

We use Google Analytics and it does give that breakdown into organic, direct and referrals. It shows ca 3000 visits from google/organic but also 6 from google.co.uk/referrals - same goes for other search engines, eg. 100 bing/organic and 8 bing.com/referral.

What I don't understand is the referral ones. Where on google.co.uk or bing.com would there be a link to our site? Other than in search results - which I would not just think of as organic, but also wouldn't they come from other sources (directories, affiliates, etc)?

    Thanks very much in advance!
