I'm starting to work on Search Engine Optimization, and I have a basic doubt. When we talk about keyword density, is there any limit to use the more relevant keywords in the text of a website page? I've read some information that indicated that the word that we are optimizing should't be more than 10% of the text, is this correct?

'keyword density' in 2009 is a myth i'm afraid. it's worth using your keywords (esp in the title tag, h1, etc), but the safest course of action for body copy is to pretend you've never heard the phrase 'keyword density' & write persuasively for your target audience.

As DJ writes, it is better to put all your efforts in to producing copy that is targeted to your audience and will produce conversions. Don't waste your time on finding that magic bullet, keyword density - it doesnt exist.
A page which has 10 occurrences of a particular keyword will not necessarily rank higher or convert better than one with 5 occurrences.

I agree with DJ and Eddy, keyword density is irrelevant. I would put my efforts in understanding the ‘Keyword placement priority’ and implementing a strategy geared for primarily the viewer reading the content. If you do both, you cannot go wrong.

Keyword density is not completely irrelevant. Its importance on SEO has reduced lately but it stall has soem role to play,although it is limited. I agreethat it is important to think of the user more and write in anatural manner. However if you want to rank high, it is also improtant to include the main keyword in the title, woards the begining of the article, at least once in the alt tag for an image on the page and proably also a couple of times at least in the article's body. Of course this still does not account to 10%; actually it may not even add up to 2%. If you are an extremely high authority site, which most of aus aren't, then I guess you can get away with achieveing a first page rank even with a 0% keyword density. In all other cases some level of density whether it is in the body, title or alt tag is improtant.

none of the pointers you mention refer to keyword density. 'keyword density' was a myth that kept going round that you should hit a certain % of keywords per page. what you are talking about is just including the keywords.
here's a 2005 article from Dr. Garcia (edited by Mike Grehan), both of whom are very highly respected SEOs. It basically adds up to 'keyword density is nonsense':

Just wanted to say I agree with most of the posts above on keyword density. Key to success is to put the keywords in your Meta data and use <h> tags to give authority to these key words on your page. Totally agree the focus should be to write engaging copy but to include the relevant keywords.
