Hi all
The US Direct Marketing Association has just released their annual report, which states the ROI of e-mail, as well as other direct channels.
The ROI of e-mail for 2009 is $43.62, which is down slightly from last year, when it was $44.93, however this was still the highest ROI of any other channel. The second highest ROI came from search advertising, which returned $21.85 per dollar spent.

It's interesting how low the volume of sales driven by social media advertising is. Certainly pay per click advertising and organic search continues to dominate online revenue for us.
It's interesting that the Direct Marketing Association would publish research showing that indirect advertising dominates online marketing spend. I would be interested also to see the breakdown between those emails sent out to pre-existing customers and those sent to totally cold contacts. I suspect most of the return comes from those with whom the marketer has a close relationship.
