Is there any best practices to follow web content migration from one product to another product ? what are the methodologies that can be applied and followed for this kind of activities?

We advocate running a content audit (2 - 3 days depending on size of site) to assess all areas of content.
We then come up with a schedule of migration with the client, that allocates responsibility for migration between us (manual migration of "tricky" content) and the client (scripting of "easy content")
It's important to try and freeze site content as early as possible also...

How to migrate large amount of content ? Do you still prefer mannual migration? Suppose a customer is using product X for content managment last 10 years. Now he want to move to product Y because of several reasons. The amount of content that needs to be migrated is too huge and product X and Y may be totally different products with different architecure. Any thoughts on this kind of migration ?

Very dependent on what X and Y are! We can script a large amount of migration, as long as the legacy content is well presented (XML / well written HTML / XHTML). Poorly formatted html is usually manually cut and paste, and content from Notes databases etc often has to be done manually...
What are your X and Y?

We migrated content as part of a web redesign last year. A content audit was essential in working out which content we would keep and which content we would rework. The audit showed that much content was out-of-date. I
think the site gained value as a result of the substantial pruning that following. We were also able to put resources into new content creation rather than content migration for the sake for the sake of content migration.
One best practice would therefore be to consider the user of the site and make sure the content is still relevant to them.

I agree to the point that we need to do thorough content audit before starting any migration. There are several types of migration and i am keen in 'One CM tool to another Tool'.
Lets take an example where i have Vignette as my current WCM tool and i want to migrate this content to say Documentum.
for this kind of activity what approach do u prefer? What kind of practice is advised?.
