    Hi,

We are building an overseas property website and wondered what the main services of a good domain registry company are, are they mostly the same? Can someone recommend any names? I've heard that the quality of re-direction and SEO can be affected by which domain company you go with?

    Regards

    Patrick

    Hi,

I use 123-reg.co.uk for all my domain names (personal and work). They are cheap (£3 per year for a .uk). You can control the DNS so you can create sub-domains (e.g. you can direct yourdomain.com to a live site and test.yourdomain.com to a test site).
I haven't heard that the company you use affects the redirection.

    Hope this helps,

    Bertie

The company you use to register your domains makes no difference, it is where the site is seen to be hosted that makes the difference.

123-reg.co.uk are a good registrar, and cheap. I have a few dozen domain names with them and no problems to date. I've heard less enthusiastic comments about their  hosting services though.

Godaddy do very cheap .com domains also.

Thanks for that. So which hosting companies would you recommend? We need a company to host an initial holding page and then the site proper.

Depends on size of site and expected traffic and whetehr you need a database or specific coding (e.g. ASP, PHP, JSP etc)

I definitely do not recommend 1&1 or 123reg/webfusion/pipex for hosting. (altho agree 123reg are ok for domain reg)

Have a look round Webhostdir and webhostingtalk for recommendations

Drop me a note and let us know what technologies you are using to build the site, and an idea of the traffic, we may be able to help with your site hosting and domain registration.

I saw your other note re the image handling on your property site, I have a few examples of that also that may be of interest.

    Hi Patrick

Take look around locally.  One of the biggest complaints about registration and hosting companies is that you often cannot contact them directly. You will find there will be a smaller local organisation close to you where you can develop a direct contact for hosting and they will no doubt handle any registration for you as well. You can't beat personal contact for service.

    Where are you based?

    Tony
