My main message is be very careful. If you've ever been on an email list, you very rapidly seem to receive messages from new organisations and people who have no idea of your interests. We would promote an organic approach to building your own list of people/orgs who are interested in your own products/services. Quality not quantity should be the matra.
Try your own newsletter with a viral/forward to a friend element, certainly try search marketing pointing at some optin form to sign up for your services.
