Hi James
The email list broker question comes up quite a bit and I've yet to come across a comprehensive resource on this. However, the ones that usually seem to come up - for the UK this is - are as follows:
- Royal Mail - http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/jump2?mediaId=600143&catId=400095
- Claritas - http://www.claritas.co.uk/uk/interactive/etargetting/
- Experian - http://www.experiancontactmail.com/
- Interactive Prospect Targeting - http://www.ipt-ltd.co.uk/direct1.html
- Media.co.uk - http://www.media.co.uk/email-marketing/index.htm
- WebActiv - http://www.emaillistbrokersuk.com
- UK Marketing Management - http://www.ukmarketingmanagement.com/E-marketing/e-marketing.html
There are of course the DM agencies or e-mail marketing agencies who could no doubt help further. But institutions like the CIM or IDM don't seem to have much info on this topic.
Any contributions welcome!

Those that Ashley lists are mainly B2C. To those I would add all the media owners - online equivalents of newspapers and magazines.
For B2B, the best sources are large trade magazine publishers such as:
- Mardev (www.mardev.com) Reed
- VNU (http://marketing.vnu.co.uk/)
- EMap Communications (www.emap.com)
A Google search, e.g. E-mail list brokers uk suggests there are limited options for reputable brokers - I think it is best to go straight to media owners or conference organisers who have built large targeted lists which can be generally be trusted to be permisson based.
A business opportunity for someone?

We used to be sceptical about data providers but you do need to find a good data provider, there are alot of cowboys out there. We have an email marketing product, called NewZapp, and get asked regularly for data.
In May we started to have discussions with a data provider, Corpdata, www.corpdata.co.uk, we were initially very sceptical I have to admit.
We were about to do an exhibition in Glasgow and hadn't arranged any meetings, so we decided to test our potential partner. They provided data for 600 contacts from central Scotland, the Friday before the show. We emailed them with the details of the show and what we were exhibiting. On Monday we reviewed the campaign statistics and found 7 people had opened the email several times and clicked on links detailing further information. Our sales staff phoned the 7 people, we saw 6 of them at the show on the Wednesday and Thursday, and another 3 we had emailed and not phoned. Since then we have sold to 2, a 3rd is a dealer, and we have submitted 1 tender.
I think this is the best 'cold' marketing activity we have completed. We simply couldnot have completed this without
1. Email Marketing
2. Good data
