A very quick question - What are the risks with moving to Flash based video streaming? Here in BP we have been using Real and Windows Media formats for our video streaming however we find that we have to provide the user with so many media options that it’s becoming expensive and slow to produce. Is Flash video streaming a viable alternative? The hope is to have a single execution per video that encapsulated both low and high bandwidth requirements whilst also catering for accessibility i.e. transcripts.

Afternoon Matthew,
Flash files size tends to be smaller and is perfect for online streaming. The only issue is bandwidth. Each stream uses bandwidth whereas if the file is downloaded then it can be viewed multiple times from the hard drive.
Users will go for Windows format 9 times out of 10 if it's a choice of download. (One of our partners manages the online video for the tourist board)
Most regular web visitors will have Flash on thier pc or mac.
Our partners convert the shot video into multiple formats at the push of a button so takes minimal time. It's more about ensuring the hosting will not fall over should it be Madonna in the next corporate video.

Take a look at this video we did with John Redwood MP...
Video Shoot Productions shot the video and i-Broadcast turned this into the different formats
With the next version of our Business in Berkshire website we will be using our web partner's new technology. This will have the ability for us to load multiple Flash files into a system that allows the user easy access and much more... take a look www.textic.com , they are very focussed on accessibility as you will see.
