Can anyone give me an idea of how long it would take a developer to add the Google tracking code to 5 master templates (website of just over 100 pages). Thanks

Not long at all. Its a small bit of javascript code. To set up analytics accounts, install the script and test. One hour at most, probably much less if its just updating the 5 templates.

Let me guess, they are charging you a days work for it? An hour is probably enough as said previously, but any change like this should be tested and there are overheads in terms of time and communication so a couple of hours wouldn't be unreasonable..

I'd say about 2 minutes! A global search and replace at your end body tag would add what you need. Then upload your templates. It's incredible that anyone would charge you for doing this.

RMM is correct, it's the time for testing which is important.  You may also need help configuring and understanding the reports.

But if you want to do it properly and also track file downloads and external links, it could take considerably longer.  It will depend on the brief given to the developer.  Doing things properly takes thought and time.

Ensure you have considered the effect on user experience.  Availability of your own website is one matter, but do you want to depend on others as well?

By the way, it is good practice not to install such code on any log in, transactional pages, administration screens and other pages where sensitive data is transferred, in the same way that widgets and other third party content should be avoided in such areas.
