New media design is so different from *print* design that we as designers can no longer *own* the creative production without understanding the technology (and Dreamweaver doesn’t count!) On the other hand most *techies* have no concept of design and their sites suffer accordingly. If Maeda’s nurturing of a team of *superdesigners* is the future, then those of us who can only manage one discipline are a dying breed. However, I think the need for indepth knowledge in so many different areas means that few will achieve this and their will always be work for us mere mortals.
