I guess it depends on how much you want to succeed with your website venture?  But also if you have crated a web-site surely you want as many relevant people to see it as you can and that requires a t minimum a basic understanding of SEO principles and practice and applying them to your site

depends on the key words... and the foundations the site is built on.

if you are chasing popular key phrases then you'll need to do some work... if your client is in a niche market with little need of that extra push then sit back and enjoy the natural results!

if the site is simply a brochure they can refer to when needed then don't worry about seo... people can spend thousands for very little impact... rather like postal campaigns of old... people thought they should do them and wouldn't get sacked for spending a bundle on stamps... i guess their is a spot of mirroring going on today!

things need to be thought through and budgets spent wisely.

If SEO is to work, it  needs to be more than a dry intellectual exercise.  That is the ultimate lesson.

I guess the simplest answers are:

Yes - if you want people that don't know what you do or what your URL is to find your site

No - if you are in a niche (as Jonathan referred to) with very few or no competitors

What matters most is what you do once you decide that you do need to invest in natural SEO.   As with most things in life, the secret is planning for every eventuality.

You'll need to consider everything from recency and updating of content to originality and relevance.  There are a host of operational foundations that SEO is built upon aside from the intellectual wellspring.

I think that every site owner try to put best of designs, content and keywords during designing process. So, what is the reason behind failure of site popularity?and why SEO is needed?
Competitors strategy analysis,Because every thing is dependent on visits and if visitors are shifting or not responding then it means your competitor have more powerful SEO strategy.I think that SEO basic factors are not consistent. It's changing according to demand.

Absolutely, SEO has to be part of the founding design principles as well as the implementation and ongoing maintenance phases.  Link building is also key.   For that to really work, I refer you to my earlier comments.

If your content is good, relevant and updates often people will link to it.   You can also help yourself by using blogging to generate links to your site.   Social Networks can also help.   But always remember, anything less than relevant posting is equivalent to spamming and could work against you.

It goes back to what I said in my earlier post - the approach has to be both intellectual and practical, static in principle yet dynamic in practice.

If we are talking about paying someone to 'optimize' your website for the purpose of appearing higher for given search terms in the organic search results on Google (or other major search engine), then I think you are wasting your money.

Quite clearly, as others have said already, driving traffic to your site is important. So people need to find you. However as the world of online marketing starts to mature, you won't have to look far to find professional marketing companies that understand digital and more importantly multi channel marketing. Take a moment to look at how major brands now market their web properties as part of an integrated multi-channel campaign and see what can be learned from that.

Without a doubt website owners require a budget for marketing their web property (just as they would for any other business activity). However in my view, they should not be spending it with people that are still playing with so called 'search engine optimization'.

    Kind Regards

Definetly ,search ensinge optimization is needed for our site to drive traffic and to promote.  I had personal experience about seo that makes many changes in the field of internet marketing and here everything is trustable, no need to take tension of deciding Who to trust in internet marketing.
