    Hi

Travel is very competitive as a sector so without knowing you specific target audience, niche etc it is very hard to comment.

At WhyCommunicate? we focus on partnering with businesses rather than a being a supplier. This helps to spread your risk and allow us to be rewarded for the results we deliver.

Please feel free to contact me. I am sure we can help to develop your business via online business.

    Regards

Your plan must include both short-term and long-term strategies in order to succeed.

Short term marketing strategies are those that bring you a temporary boost in traffic. Although these techniques are very important to your over-all plan, they are only a temporary traffic source and must not be solely relied upon.
    Short term marketing strategies include:

    Purchasing advertising (PPC)
    Bulletin Boards

    Search Engines

Long term marketing strategies are those that bring you a steady stream of targeted traffic over time. These strategies will continue to produce results even years down the road.

    Long term marketing strategies include:

      Opt-in Lists
      Freebies
      Content

By creating and implementing a balanced marketing strategy, using both short-term and long-term strategies, you will drive a steady stream of targeted traffic to your web site.

    Kind regards,

    Sunil

All this strategy stuff is OK of course.  But if you are a start-up the most important thing you need to find out is whether you can (a) do the business and (b) make a profit out of it.  I have been involved in startups where everything was happening instead of selling so we didn't know after a long time whether the concept actually worked.

20 grand a month will get you significant  instant business via Pay Per Click within days of starting the campaign.  Within weeks you will know if the business works.  If you hit a snag you can turn off the tap until the wrinkles are ironed out then turn it on again.   If your operationss are overwhelmed you can throttle down the business.

This may or may not be the long-term strategy for you.  You need to do the math on that, it is not rocket science (conversion rate * profit < or > cost per click ).  But you can prove your business model now, and get the operations up to scratch now, rather than waiting months for a search engine strategy to work or an advertising campaign to be set up.

But get a professional to help you.  Several in this group.  This is not for the DIYer.  I would not look for anything else in the first quarter of business.

    Hi Alex

Travel is indeed a very competitive sector, and it really depends on what type of travel you are offering - simple package holidays, cottage booking, escourted tours or volunteer travel.

We work with a lot of start up companies in devising online marketing strategies. We have actuall helped launch a start up travel company, www.grustravel.co.uk. We built and designed their website, as well as instigating and managing a search engine campaign. They are now moving into more traditional advertising circles, after a lot of success online via our partner agency www.atpadvertising.co.uk

I think we could really help you here - if you want to drop me an email, you can do so on the details below.

    Many Thanks

User confidence in your brand will be vital.  If you are starting up, do try to spend some time thinking about user's website privacy and security concerns.  If you get traffic to your website, you don't want them to disappear or never come back again due to lack of confidence.

    Perhaps think about:

    • how to convey a sense of security
    • Data Protection Act and your own privacy statement and website terms of use
    • Distance Selling Regulations
    • Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard if you will take payments
    • what you want to do with user data now and in the future
    • how will you protect your website
Users are becoming more knowledgeable about such things now, so take time to get it right before you spend your money for online marketing.
