It depends on what you're after. Many of these tools allow you to conduct short surveys of about 20 questions before asking you to pay up for the 'gold' service - which is often pretty expensive. Having tried using one myself, I found most things I needed to know were answered in under 20, but if its a 'one-shot' survey which you do rarely, getting as much detail as possible can be very helpful.

I'm looking for something pretty comprehensive and don't mind paying for it. It must be robust, reliable, able to handle more complex form elements (drop downs, text areas, IF / THEN etc.).

Not too bothered about detailed analytics and reporting as we'd do that offline - we absolutely MUST be able to get the raw data out easily though.

I'm think of using it for occasional surveys. More specifically, we are going to be doing a New Media Rate Card Survey and are wondering whether to just build the thing ourselves (not that complex but time nonetheless) or use one of these tools if someone else has done a good enough job.

The lead product in this space a while back was Quancept web, who's parent company Quantime was bought by SPSS. It provides all of the features you need, as well as raw data output and analytical tools should you need them.

Not sure on pricing as it was aimed at research agencies (NOP, Milward Brown etc.) however I think they do an ASP version or cheap small user version.

    Have a look at http://www.spss.com/spssmr/online/demo.htm

These survey tools seem OK but lack the depth of reporting that I think could be an excellent opportunity for you. Performance Drivers (www.PerformanceDrivers.com) does an excellent job of capturing the survey and providing some amazing ways of filtering the data so that you can get the most out of it (in real time)

Moreover, if you have their LifeLine web analytics service, the two would work together to provide ways of analyzing web behaviors by segment. If you want to gain the most learning from your survey, check it out - and then call for consultation.

    Hi Ashley,

SurveyWriter is a pure ASP if that matters to you. It has comprehensive and powerful question development tools designed for professional market researchers. It also has custom crosstab reporting package. For more information, check out this month's Quirks Market Research Review for software reviews written by Tim Macer. The whole edition is devoted to Online Research.

    Ashley,

I implemented Confirmit when at QXL, we used it for all our survey work across Europe. Basically it's an "industrial strength" market research tool and can do all of the things that you would expect and that you mention.

Data can either be reported online or can be exported into Excel, SPSS etc. Of you want more detail, give me a shout.
