    hi, Andrew,

You don't give much background, so I'll keep this fairly general. If you post a few more details (perhaps give the site address? how long's it been around? what's triggered you to worry about thsi?) I'll try and help out more.

    org is best if:

    • your site isn't heavily sales-focused
    • you're targetting north america/various regions

but, it's not bad at all for the uk. Thousands of others have had great success. For example, do a google 'pages from the uk' search for site:org.

if you're using .org & to target the UK:

A couple of things to maximise your chances of success if you are solely focused on the UK:

    • include 'UK' in your title tags, to make sure you don't miss out on search clicks from those who might otherwise assume you're elsewhere
    • host your site in the UK as (though your rankings may be slightly lower than a .co.uk, everything else being equal) you will still appear in a 'pages from the UK' search

    Hope that's of some use,

    daniel

hi i did it all very cheap ie, built it on Tripod, and hosted it with 'freeparking'

and used .com cos it was cheaper, before realising how important this is for my business, though i dont want to spend lots of money on hosting etc,

i was told that it is masked

    uses frames

    and .co.uk maybe better

i am trying to unmask my site at freeparking

but was considering moving to host 1&1

was told hosting is better than parking

so i have the choice of registrar transfer or just DNS transfer

or should i just build a new site and get a new domain name from 1&1

any help would be most appreciated. my head is sore!

"but was considering moving to host 1&1"

1&1's datacenters are in Germany. Don't put a .com targetted at the UK on 1&1 if you want organic search traffic.

    hi, Andrew,

this is a .org.uk, not a .org. They are very different things! You should have no problem whatsoever with google UK rankings using this (not because of the .org.uk anyway). Though the other issues you mention will harm your search results:

    1. yep, get rid of the free hosting
    2. avoid framed masking
    3. if this is your main business & the website is integral to that, i'd recommend getting someone to sort out both the hosting issue & the design of the site
feel free to drop me an email (address is in my profile) if you'd like any help/suggestions with that.
