We have the grumbled with our existing hosting company. They have dropped the ball too many times now so we are looking around.

This is ecommerce hosting im referring to, so if hosting goes down so does the business.

The obvious place is Rackspace. Big bucks ...but you get what you pay for. Mostly.

I want a hosting company that actually has someone on the end of the phone who can fix the problem pronto and guarantees 99.95%+ up time, with severe penalties if they screw up and more specifically, a very easy get out clause if they screw up repeatedly.

I would like to hear personally from anyone who uses/used Rackspace in the past.

    looking forward to some replies.

What makes you believe that companies like Rackspace are actually so good?  Marketing and practice differ as you may know.  ..just talking from experience.

I think it's relatively hard to find what you are looking for.   From my experience no managed-hosting provider will agree for anything less than 12 months. ...and it's unlikely that they will be self-penalised hard!

Finally, sometimes it's tricky to put responsibility on someone as all these companies usually go as far as the OS level and not the application level.   I think it's what you said...you get what you pay for.  But if you are looking for up to OS-level responsibility kind of thing, I think I can point you to the right direction.

We've been using Rackspace for the past 2 years without too many problems hosting 4 job boards on 2 servers using about 100GB per month.  I would reccomend them from what I know of them and our last hosting company.

My grumble with them has come in the past few days though as I need to move servers and they are making difficult for me.  So this inflexibilty on their part is making me look at other providers.  I'm looking at UKFast - wonder if anybody has any experiences good or bad with them?

We have experience of loads of hosting companies, and they have all let us down consistently - with the sole exception of Rackspace, who are brilliant.. I rate them very highly indeed, and refuse to host with anyone else. We've now migrated all our sites to them.

We are now official Rackspace partners, which means that if I introduce a new client, I get a nice kick-back too. Do you want me to introduce you to my account manager in the UK?

    At least your honest :)

LOL - it's not that bad is it!?

You asked to hear from people who have experience of Rackspace - and I have got a  long standing working relationship with them. In fact, the working relationship is now an official partnership. The reason we've become partners with Rackspace is because we trust them not to balls up, based on a long and happy working relationship. We wouldn't recommend them to our clients (or to you) if we didn't really rate them.

The fact that I get commission when I recommend them is just gravy. If I wasn't up front about the commission, and you looked on our website and saw the Rackspace partner logo, you'd think I was a right shyster, wouldn't you? Honesty's the best policy, I think.

    What are your requirements?

Are you looking for a dedicated server or will shared hosting do?

I've recently signed up with Media Temple (www.mediatemple.com) for hosting a number of small scale websites. I've opted for the shared hosting option and so far they have been brilliant. I get tons of space and bandwidth (1TB) for a tenner a month.

It's in the US, though -- but the offer 24/7 telephone support.

If you're sticking to the UK stay away from Datagate (www.datagate.co.uk). They charge something along the lines of £30 + VAT for every GB over your monthly quota.
