Hi there Karine. There are two main reasons why websites have site maps.

The first is so that anyone coming to your website will be able to see all of your website's pages in one place like the index of a book, so really to provide them with an additional navigation tool.

The second, and arguably more important reason, is for Search Engines. How well you are rated by search engines is at least partially based on how well your website is constructed and structured. The purpose of a site map in this case is to provide a place where you can list all of your pages, a hub from which the search engine's spider/robot/crawler can find all of your pages. The more pages they find and the easier you make it to find them the less the likelihood of pages being missed due to inadequate navigation which would be detrimental to your search engine optimisation. There are other reasons like depth of navigation and keyword/phrase density on a site map page, but if you'd like any more information maybe you'd like to have a look at our website at www.scribbles-writing-services.co.uk and do feel free to email me if you have any questions.
