I received a form this morning from Skillset for the 5th census of the Interactive Media Industry.

It all sounds very laudable, but they ask for my telephone number, fax number, post code and email address.

quote: we are asking for contact details so we know what region you operate in (fine) and we can get in touch ... .

Are they really going to phone, email and fax me?

I put the survey in the bin instinctively.  Call it illogical.

Bob, I’m responsible for Skillset’s annual Census which as you say is now in its fifth year. The only reason for asking respondents to indicate their contact details is in order to ensure contact if there is anything we need to clarify once the form has been returned. If there are any unintentional mistakes on the form and the contact details are blank the form is rendered useless. The results from previous years have been invaluable for influencing training policy and have provided us with the first reliable estimates of employment in our industry. The information has also greatly helped us and our colleagues to plan and anticipate training needs, and has strengthened the case for leveraging public funds to meet these needs. The support of the industry in the past has been invaluable and we hope for this to continue. If based on this your concerns have been alleviated and you would like to complete a form, any audio visual company can complete a form online at: www.skillset.org/census.Best wishes, Catherine

    OK I have done it.

    A couple of comments.

    1. It was not clear if the interactive census is instead of or additional to the general census

    2. Why did it keep asking 'are you sure'  whenever you submit a page

    3. why didn't it just go from page to page instead of going back to the home page every time

    4. entering staff number figures in the lower part of the form you can't see the headings.

Bob, Thank you for taking the time to complete the form. In response to your first comment the Skillset Census is one survey  and the different forms have been tailor made for each sector to make them easier to complete. I appreciate your final three comments and these will be fedback to the designers in order to ensure a user-friendly experience when completing a form online. Best wishes, Catherine

Very logical from data mining point of view - it will be possible to match job requirements with skills of people living close to prospective place of work, thus increasing chances they might be interested in a job. Contact deails are handy for those lucky ones who matched requirements. Not suggesting that this is exactly what was planned to be done in this case, but it certainly sounds pretty logical to me.

    regards,

    Alex

Except this was supposed to be a census with the data kept confidential.  The post code I understand, but in this whole census are they really going to fax anyone?
