I can see that this isn't the most active thread, so as an example, I'll give the costs for our latest CMS build so that people can get an idea of what I'm looking for.
Project timespan late Nov - mid Feb
Site description: Popular Music/Entertainment based site
Number of pages in sites: approx 400
Traffic to site: 150Gb a month
Software, WebDeck CMS - £10,000
Integration Services - £10,000
hosting (per annum) - $5000
These costs dont include the design work which was completed by another company, but I suspect they are in the region of around 8-10K
Are these costs similar to what others are paying for CMS builds?

Hi Matthew
That is really like the old analogy of how long is a piece of string.
What kind of content & media do the pages contain?
How much flexibility is required for the CMS system?
Is there integration with any 3rd party companies / content providers?
Workflow control i.e. sign off processes, is there a need for this?
Traffic in terms of GB, not really a useful indicator of traffic levels. Are there media downloads on the site?
Why are you asking? Are you looking for confirmation of your spend or looking for an alternative supplier.
Regards,
Matthew O’Riordan

Hi Matthew
As Matt points out the answer, of course, depends on a great number of things. However, if pushed into the 'ball park' game I guess I'd break things down roughly as follows:
1. 'Low End' - probably a basic open source, or pre-built, forms-driven system for updating site content via the web. Not including workflow, personalisation and so on.
Cost: you could probably get this for £5-£15k depending on who you use (contractors vs. small agency vs. big agency vs. consultancy)
2. 'Lower Mid End' - probably a reasonably feature rich CMS based on modular code. Not quite a "product" as such and most likely developed by an agency for re-use with multiple clients.
Cost: in the £15k-£40 range
3. 'Upper mid end' - a decent, fully featured CMS, which could be considered a product in its own right, with corresponding support, releases, documentation, training and so on. Most likely still offered by the mid-larger agencies who have developed something over the years. Or, one of the more modestly priced CMS software packages.
Cost: in the £40k-£100k range depending on licensing and integration/customisation requirements.
4. 'High end' - An enterprise level CMS that is fully featured and almost certainly comes from one of the bigger specialist CMS software firms.
Cost: £100k-£800k (and more...) depending on the scale and scope of the deployment and subsequent maintenance and support contract.
Having played the 'ball park' game I now look forward to the posts from CMS providers who do it all but it miraculously only costs £12.50 ;)

Ummm! "How long is a piece of string" ?
Idiomatically...... "twice the distance from the middle"
Sorry! must be the cold weather !

Hi Ashley,
Your cheapest deal would be to sign for a free PHP hosting and get free GUI CMS. Finally customise the interface to reflect your brand.
Total cost - £10.00 hosting a month.

Actually, I am a vendor. (Solid State Group)
I started the thread in an attempt to find out what experieces people have had, and how much they have paid.
I realise a CMS can be very small or large but I was hoping that people might give the main details and costs, like:
Software: Interwoven, £80,000
Hardware: Sun, £10,000
Development time: 4 months
Etc.
By doing so giving us an idea of what packages are out there for what kind of cash, how long they take to implement, and what kind of experience the project was.
Thats why I gave basic information about the project we just completed. If people want to know more about the features for each package, there are relevant websites for each CMS.
