Does anyone have any firm views on how sub-domains impact on SEO activity or whether it is best practice in managing a corporate website?

Hi Sanjay
Google treats each subdomain as its own domain. As such its impact on Search Engine Optimisation should be the same as having a completely separate domain. If using subdomains you need to look out for issues such as duplicate content. Using subdomains is ideal for online reputation management as well as the obvious benefit of dividing up content. However from an SEO point of view you need to be careful that your main domain is not impacted by the change in content.
Hope that helps
