Hey Matt,
You may know about this already but www.freelancers.net is a good place to shout out for this kind of thing - listings are free. You might want to specify location as many replies can come from overseas...
Cheers,
c.

Hi Chris
Yes, I know about www.freelancers.net and am currently using it. The problem I find with freelancers.net typically is the quality of the candidates that use it, and also the number of overseas companies & individuals who contact you persistently regardless of whether you specify "Local London based people only".
Another one that I use is www.chinwag.com mailing lists, but that tends to be subscribed to by more marketing people than production people.
Does anyone else know of any other places where one tends to find the higher end of the freelancer market?
Matt

Hmmm. Maybe we need a section on E-consultancy for this kind of thing. I know what you mean about quality of candidates... will put the word out to see who knows where you can access the top end of the market (assuming there is such a facility).
Cheers,
c.

Can't really advise where to find good people (all of those who I know personally live well outside of London) but I think a good filter that would allow to catch quality candidates in murky waters of sites like freelancer could be along the lines of a few (hard) tasks that any prospective candidate must solve before sending CV - this should be particularly effective for coding jobs. It is really strange that so few companies in the UK use this method - the only one that I was personally involved was in games industry in 1999.

Hi alex, do you require someone to work with you in your office, is this the reason you are concerned about the distance they are away from you? if not i can send you a copule of CV's which you may be interested in.

If you are looking for more creative or production type roles then http://www.creativepool.co.uk is a good place to start. They have only recently started to get into the digital side of things but appear to be doing a pretty good job of it.
