Have posted this up here to share with other users. Will e-mail you separately.
The most successful ones I've seen recently are:
- MTV's election-time 'Stereo MPs' - a spoof music/dancing thing where you could make different politicians dance to different music, etc
- Channel 4's 'Gay-o-meter' publicising this year's 'Metrosexuality' programme, where you fill out questions to be told how 'gay' or 'straight' you are
- www.politicalcompass.org - where you sit along 2 political scales
Sorry don't have URLs for first 2 - suggest you go look at their sites.
In each case, I was genuinely interested and/or amused, liked the experience and forwarded it onto a load of people. Job done.

ps There was another, but this was less 'suitable' for this environment (involving how well you could spot silicon from natural - and we're not talking chips...)

Paul - I guess you have come across the Viral Bank site at http://www.viralbank.com/ which has a repository of previous viral campaigns? Would be a good place to find examples.
