IAB (internet advertising standards, http://www.iab.net), ABCe (site auditing standards, http://www.abce.org.uk/), TRUSTe (personal privacy watchdog, http://www.truste.com) spring immediately to mind but who are the other leading standards bodies? What about e-commerce metrics for example?

    Any pointers gratefully received.

ABCe and the IAB are membere of JICWEBS, Joint Industry Committee for Web Standards (http://www.jicwebs.org/). As such I would say JICWEBS sets the standards used by Online Marketers in the UK.

These are definitely the leading bodies in the UK. Elsewhere in Europe, there's Diffusion Controle in France (www.ojd.com/fr). They monitor circulation of newspapers and periodicals and have been awarding qulaity marks for web analytics suppliers in France since 2001. KIA (www.kiaindex.se) is a Swedish organisation for online advertising, in which advertisers, media agencies & website owners work together. These are the only other bodies I've come accross.

The other bodies who agree metrics for the UK through JICWEBS are: the Association of Online Publishers (www.ukaop.org.uk), Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (www.ipa.co.uk), the IPA Digital Marketing Group, the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers (www.isba.org.uk), Newspaper Publishers' Association, and Newspaper Society (www.newspapersoc.org.uk).
So you can see that it's a very representative process! ABCE chairs the group.
