The fourth edition of the Econsultancy Social Listening Buyer's Guide (previously the Online Reputation and Buzz Monitoring Buyer's Guide), relevant for a global audience, is an invaluable resource for client-side marketers and suppliers who want to understand this market and invest in Social Listening technology and services. The guide looks at market trends within this secctor, with profiles of the leading social media management vendors as well as advice for buyers looking for a Social Listening provider.
Econsultancy's sixth Quarterly Digital Intelligence Briefing, produced in partnership with Adobe, examines the trends for managing and measuring the business value of social media and provides a snapshot of social media uses, challenges and needs from companies today. The research is based on a survey of more than 650 marketing professionals from agencies and the client-side, a near-equal mix of B2C and B2B across industries in North America and Europe with a concentration in the US and UK.

Think it's fair to say that Ashley has identified the usual suspects and got it pretty right. I also agree with Ching-Har Wong about the loads of cowboys out there.
SED are hoping to climb the usual suspects list over the next year and become a well known respected agency. Just like social media, nothing happens overnight if done properly.

@Ben - good to hear from you. Not come across you guys before but looks interesting. Couldn't agree more about building credibility / trust / authority etc. over time. Whilst digital speeds things up in so many ways it still takes a while to establish a good reputation and respected brand. (and, actually, lots of parallels with the world of SEO now too where there are really no more 'quick/easy' routes to the top IMHO).

Hi Ashley,
Thanks for the mention.
I think that's a great list. We had a few others in a recent post on the best Social Media Agencies in Europe (Wolfstar, 33Digital, Nudge) http://www.freshnetworks.com/blog/2011/01/picking-a-social-media-agency-in-europ/
The question in my mind is what will this list look like in a couple of years time? We find that we're pitching more against PR, Digital and Ad agencies than we are against other social media agencies. And clearly incumbent agencies have an advantage.
Thankfully that's balanced with news this week from America that the most socially-advanced brands appear to be using specialists considerably more than they are using other agencies: via Jeremiah Owyang: http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2011/03/24/data-how-the-advanced-corporations-spend-on-social-business/

Thanks Ashley, appreciate the mention! We're still small and new but we'll do our best to make the more established list next year

What a delight to see we are included. We are rather chuffed to be counted amongst such esteemed peers too.
What's interesting, in knowing my colleagues on the list is that they are companies that are driven by a passion for social media. Agencies that wont sit still, that challenge thinking and set the agenda for social media.
Proud to be included. Thank you

I can second the nomination for Content & Motion -- top drawer.
We Are Social has done some terrific work.
And I've always like the Nixon McInnes fresh voice.
I'll keep an eye out for the others.
Thanks for the list.

Thanks for the mention and good to see we're on the radar given we're still relatively small (although we're currently expanding our London operation.)
We try hard to wave the 'specialists know best' banner, especially when something evolves as quickly as social.
