It’s that time again when we round up a bunch of the most interesting digital marketing statistics we’ve seen in the past week.
This week it includes Google authorship, data fragmentation, World Cup sponsors, PPC, tablet ownership, programmatic buying and Luis Suarez.

Google removes G+ photos from search results
- Not so much a stat as a minor update to Google’s search interface, but it’s interesting nonetheless.
- This week the search giant announced that it is removing profile photos and the circle count from search results that include G+ authorship.
- The stated aim is to create a more consistent look across devices and create a simpler, “less-cluttered” design.
- It has led to claims that Google is just trying to protect its ad revenues as the social annotations drove higher clickthrough rates.
71% of World Cup shares come from non-sponsors
- Non-sponsors are apparently gaining more social shares than official World Cup sponsors.
- According to Unruly, despite official sponsors creating almost twice as many ads, commercials by brands not affiliated with the FIFA tournament have so far attracted 8.9m shares across social media sites.
- Videos from official sponsors, who paid between £8m to £120m to have their names associated with the World Cup, have managed 3.6m shares.
- The top video remains Shakira’s team up with non-sponsor Activia.
Marketers struggle with data fragmentation
- Econsultancy’s new report, The Path to Unified Marketing, examines the difficulties that brands face in obtaining a single view of their customers, as well giving an overview of the state of the industry.
- Almost three-quarters of respondents (72%) reported problems with data fragmentation, which can slow or stall processes and call validity into question.
- The knock on effect is that fewer than 20% say they have a strong capability in viewing and using data from their marketing channel applications.

- Published in association with Tealium, the report is based on a survey of 313 client-side marketers in Q2 2014.
Are people aware of PPC ads?
- Are Google users aware of PPC ads? That’s the question we set out to answer in a survey of more than 2,000 people.
- 10% of respondents said they’ve never seen an ad on Google, while a quarter (25%) said they had seen them but never clicked one.

Streaming and online radio growth in the US
- The most recent update of our ever-popular Internet Statistics Compendium was published this week.
- It includes data from Mary Meeker’s presentation which shows that legal online streaming (on services such as Pandora and Spotify) is booming in the US, and appears to be eating into both digital and physical music purchases.
- During 2013, 118bn music units were streamed in the US – up 32% year-over-year.
- In comparison digital purchases topped out at 1.3bn (down -6%) and physical purchases hit 172m (down -13%).
Pretty much everyone owns a tablet
- Almost half (45%) of GB adults now own a tablet compared to 32% a year ago, according to new data from Kantar.
- The highest penetration is among 35-44s where 58% of adults now have at least one tablet in their home.
- Presence of children is the strongest driver of this, with 69% of parents of school age children having a tablet at home.
- Apple remains the market leader with 56% of tablet users having an iPad, although this is down from 63% in the last six months.
Nando’s rules on social
- Chicken franchise Nando’s is now the most popular UK food and beverage brand on social media.
- It has nearly 3m Facebook fans, which is 1.4m more ‘likes’ than second place TGI Friday’s.
- The data comes from eDigitalResearch’s new social media benchmark.
Everyone’s talking about Suarez
- With the World Cup group stages coming to an end, Hootsuite has rounded up stats showing what has got the British public talking.
- Unsurprisingly, Luis Suarez is the most talked about player after scoring two goals against England and biting an Italian defender.
- Wayne Rooney is the England player with the most mentions (26,000), though he’s in fourth place behind Messi (74,000) and Ronaldo (50,000).
- Among the World Cup’s official partners, Adidas and Sony are the most talked about with more than 400,000 mentions each between 19-25 June.
Programmatic accounts for a third of UK display ads
- Almost three in every £10 spent on online display ads in 2013 went through programmatic technologies, according to an IAB study.
- Of the £1.86bn spent on display ads across the internet and mobile in 2013, 28% (about £500m) was traded programmatically using automated systems and processes such as real-time bidding.
- Direct sales between publishers and agencies/advertisers accounted for half (51%) of UK digital display ad sales while just over a fifth (22%) were bought through ad networks.
Facebook interactions increase
- Data from Socialbakers shows that brand interactions are consistently increasing on Facebook.
- Looking at interactions with 3m of Facebook’s most popular pages, the data shows that since January 2014 interactions have risen 30%.
