Just to be clear, I haven’t tried out all of these themes but I’ve chosen them based on the UX of the demo versions or the quality of the customer reviews…

This simple, attractive theme is one of three available to download for free from Mammasaurus.

However it’s only a child theme, so in order for it to work you need to first download the Baylys parent theme which costs $12. 

Red Page

Cost: $55

Red Page offers a slick, modern design that appears to be built with ecommerce in mind, though it would also work well as a portfolio. 

It comes with built in Woocommerce support, so users can quickly setup their own responsive online store.


Cost: Free

Yoko is a free responsive theme that is best suited to blogs or magazines.

It looks very slick and comes with tutorial videos to guide users through the process of customising their site.

Subway has achieved an average rating of 4.42 stars from 73 different reviewers, which is definitely a good sign.

It comes with a huge range of customisable features so with a bit of work you will be able to create your perfect site.


Cost: $45

Impreza has a five star rating on Theme Forest so you should be in safe hands with this responsive theme.

It is retina-ready and allows the user to build their own style or use one of 10 predefined colour settings.

According to the creators it is suitable for any type of website, including ecommerce, corporate, portfolio, or marketing.

This theme also has excellent feedback from its customers and can boast a five star rating.

It allows users to choose from 12 different blog layouts and has a wide range of customisable features and widgets.

The creators say that it’s best suited to blogs, magazines or minimal portfolios.

Another simple but great-looking WordPress theme, Flat has basic functionalty at the moment but the developers seem to be constantly updating and refining it.

Meeta is one of a number of themes available from WPZoom. It’s a free download though there are also premium versions available.

It offers a simple blogging layout but comes with all the features that one would expect from a decent WordPress theme.

Buttercream is yet another simple blogging theme that offers a clean but attractive layout. Its sparse design scales well to smaller screen sizes.

Oxygen is a magazine theme that offers a fluid layout that scales perfectly to smaller screens.

It has a minimal layout but offers a number of customisable options.

This premium theme has a 4.5 star rating and comes with a huge number of customisable options and plugins.
