The consumer shift towards mobile devices means that businesses should have a strategy in place to optimise their email marketing for smaller screens.

It’s not uncommon for businesses to find that up to 50% of their email messages are opened on mobile devices, however a recent Econsultancy report found that a large number of companies do not have a mobile email strategy in place, with 32% reporting this as ‘non-existent’ and 39% saying their strategy was ‘basic’.

One option for dealing with mobile email is responsive design, which uses one set of code that renders an email differently when viewed on a desktop, tablet or smartphone.

This means that the user experience is optimised regardless of where the recipient decides to open the email.

To help marketers who may be investigating this method, I’ve rounded up 15 responsive email templates that are either free or cost no more than $18.

As the name suggests, this template is aimed at cafés and restaurants. It includes a standard menu layout and a special promo style email design for reminders, announcements and special offers.

Aqua requires a small investment but offers both responsive and non-responsive templates that are compatible with MailChimp and Campaign Monitor.

Campaigner

Campaigner comes with nine layouts and eight colour schemes, meaning you’ve got a great range of potential design combinations.

It has a star rating of 3.89 based on nine ratings on Theme Forest.

Ballio

Ballio is a flat responsive template that comes with a whopping 24 colour themes and 10 layouts.

On the downside, it doesn’t come with MailChimp or Campaign Monitor tags as standard, though these can be manually added.

TIMEOUT

TIMEOUT comes with seven different layouts and four colour combinations.

It is compatible with MailChimp and Campaign Monitor and has been tested with all major email clients, including Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail and Outlook.

Email on Acid

This free template was published alongside a blog post that gives an insight into the design process.

It requires some personalisation but is a decent free option for small businesses.

Fast Mail

Fast Mail comes with eight layouts and five colour schemes, and works with MailChimp and Campaign Monitor.

Slash

Slash is a flat responsive template that comes with seven different colour schemes. It is compatible with both MailChimp and Campaign Monitor.

Zurb

Zurb offers a set of five different templates for different needs, all of which come free of charge.

They have been tested on all the major email clients to ensure compatibility, and are also work with MailChimp and Campaign Monitor.

Journey

Designed by Robbie Williams (not that one), this template comes with multiple colour options plus free lifetime updates and support.

Cost: $15

MetroMail

MetroMail comes with eight layouts and colours, and is fully compatible with MailChimp and Campaign Monitor.

It has an average rating of 3.75 from 12 ratings on Theme Forest.

Marphie

Marphie has a five star rating on Theme Forest, albeit from only three ratings. 

It comes with seven layouts and colour variations, and works with MailChimp and Campaign Monitor.

It has seven colour schemes and one mixed layout containing flexible and repeatable modules.

Tytan

Tytan apparently comes with unlimited layout and colour options, plus a free layout generator. It has been tested for compatibility with all the main email clients.

Storesletter

Storesletter, which is ‘designed to sell’, comes with three layouts and four colour schemes. It achieved an average star rating of 4.33 from 45 ratings on Theme Forest.
