Google has confirmed that Android app downloads passed the 10bn mark this past weekend.
Android is the world’s most widely-used operating system (taking 52.5% of the global smartphone market), and in app terms is now starting to catch up to Apple – which passed the 10bn download mark in January.
Eric Chu, director of the Android Developer Ecosystem said in the blog post announcing the news that this equates to a growth rate of 1bn downloads per month.
All of this just a year and a half after it first passed the billion download mark.
During that 18 months Android use has exploded around the world; around 4 billion apps were downloaded between July and December of this year alone.
