With the recent news that David Beckham is to head to the footballing backwater that is the US Major Soccer League, opportunists have been snapping up domain names related to the news.

According to domain name management firm NetNames, cyber-squatters started buying up every conceivable combination of the words ‘Beckham’ and ‘Galaxy’ as soon as the news broke. Within an hour, most variations were registered.

NetNames CEO Jonathan Robinson likened it to the first day of the sales, calling it ‘some of the fastest cybersquatting I’ve ever seen.’

He added:

“Celebrities are just as much at risk from cyber squatters as any major brand yet so many still leave themselves wide open to attack online.
A domain name is easy to secure in the first place but retrieving it from a cyber squatter is easier said than done.”

One cyber squatter from Milton Keynes registered every variation he could of the LA Galaxy name, all of which are directing news-hungry Beckham fans to sites filled with pay-per-click ads.
