The UK's digital publishers experienced massive growth in turnover last year, according to a new survey by the Association of Online Publishers (AOP).

The AOP Census 2007 found that the UK's online publishers increased revenues by an average of 60% in 2006, with further growth of 72% predicted for this year.

The AOP, which represents a range of online publishing companies, including the BBC, Reuters and IPC Media, as well as E-consultancy, surveyed 57 of its members for the census.

Its highlights include:

  • Total turnover for AOP members’ online operations increased from £344m in 2005 to £575m last year.
  • Advertising makes up 75% of online revenue for digital publishers.
  • Display ads contributed 59% of overall income, classifieds 16%, while paid-for content (including syndication) contributed 12%.
  • Paid-for content revenues rose by 50% in 2006. 46% of AOP members now charge for content, up from 37% in 2005.

Areas for growth identified by respondents were mobile, broadband and communities, while the biggest threats were thought to be the number of competitors, legal/government restrictions, and security issues.
