US online consumer spending picked up in the second quarter of the year, reaching a total of $27.2bn (£13.4bn), an increase of 23% on the same period last year, according to comScore.

The figure of $27.2bn is for non travel e-commerce - the online travel market was worth $20.3bn (£10bn) in Q2, an increase of 14%. Total e-commerce spending for the first half of 2007 was $95bn (£47bn).

The biggest gains were in sales of video games and consoles, helped by the launches of the Nintendo Wii and Sony's PS3. Sales in this category increased by 159% over Q2 2006.

Sales in the sports and fitness category increased by 58% over last year, while consumer electronics and tickets for events also experienced sales increases, of 51% and 44% respectively.

The comScore report also predicts that total US e-commerce spending will hit $200bn (£99bn) for the full year, compared with £170.8bn (£84.4bn) in 2006.

In the UK, e-commerce sales are predicted to reach £42bn in 2007, up from £30.2bn last year
