It’s great to see web start-ups and online ad companies appearing so prominently in this year's Sunday Times Tech Track 100, published by the paper yesterday.

Doncaster-based online travel agency Holiday Rooms Direct tops the league table after increasing its sales from £184,000 to just under £7m in two years, while the top ten also includes DVD rental company Lovefilm and local search firm The Best Of.

Buy.at, ranked number 9, heads a string of online marketing and web design players, including Coast Digital, Traffic Broker, Affiliate Window, Equi Media, i-level, Nucleus, RedEye and Dan Wagner’s e-commerce software provider Venda.

The table (pdf), clearly, is another sign that the e-commerce and digital ad boom is paying off for UK businesses - not just pure-play web firms but also multi-channel companies that wouldn’t have qualified for the list.

Mobile companes figure strongly – as do online retailers (TheHut.com, UK Digital Cameras, World Stores, Net-a-porter.com and London Theatre Direct) and gaming firms (King.com, Gamesys and Cashcade).

Educational content provider Espresso Education and gambling odds comparison provider Betgenius also make the list, as well as travel firm Cheapflights. It has now appeared for four years in a row.

Meanwhile loss-making online grocery retailer Ocado, reported to be close to an IPO, was down from 21st to 84th.

Onwards is upwards...
