At a time when social networks are so popular, it's easy to forget that the threaded message board was for many years the "community" of choice for many online.

For businesses and website owners that don't need all the bells and whistles of a full social network, a message board may be the perfect solution for visitors and customers who would benefit from a place to interact online.

There are a number of PHP-based message board solutions that offer proven track records and low total costs of ownership.

Which one you choose depends on a number of considerations, including:

  • The number of users you expect to serve.
  • The functionality and features those users will demand.
  • The level of support you will require.

Here are a number of solutions that will fit most needs:

Invision Power Board

Invision Power Board, also known as IP.Board, is a fine and suitable message board solution, but it's closer in functionality to phpBB than vBulletin, thus putting it in a tough spot given its $140 price tag.

While owners of IP.Board have access to a useful owner-only resources website that features a nice selection of modifications and skins, those considering IP.Board may want to take a closer look at phpBB and vBulletin before making a decision.

Cost: $140
Recommended For: Small to medium-sized communities

Phorum

Claiming to be "the original PHP and MySQL based Open Source forum software," Phorum lacks many of the features found in solutions like vBulletin and phpBB, but if you're looking for something simple like the support forum MySQL runs, Phorum is well worth giving a test drive.

Cost: Free
Recommended For: Less-demanding communities

phpBB

With millions of installations, phpBB is the most popular open-source message board solution in the world. And it's easy to see why - for a free piece of software, phpBB offers a considerable amount of functionality and is relatively easy to install, configure and administer.

A library of free design styles is available and "modifications" that extend phpBB's functionality can be downloaded as well.

Given its large installation base, it's no surprise that phpBB has an active community, something that is always a plus when dealing with free software. It's also proven to be scalable (with a little bit of work) - popular role-playing community Gaia Online is powered by phpBB.

Cost: Free
Recommended For: All communities

Simple Machines Forum

Simple Machines Forum, or SMF, is another free message board solution that finds a balance between simplicity and power.

It's not designed to provide every feature imaginable it does have a reputation for being more secure than some of its competitors.

While I'd probably recommend phpBB over SMF because it is more commonly used, SMF does have a decent community of its own.

Price: Free
Recommended For: Small to medium-sized communities

vBulletin

vBulletin is considered by many to be the crème de la crème of PHP-based message board solutions. Used by some of the largest message board communities, it has earned a reputation as the PHP-based message board solution that "serious" message board community operators turn to.

Its feature set is arguably the most comprehensive and its administrative tools are very robust.

The power of vBulletin doesn't come free. vBulletin can be obtained on an "owned license" or a "leased license." Professional services, such as installation and phone support, can also be purchased. Unfortunately, if you're looking to remove vBulletin's copyright text from the footer of your pages, it will set you back an additional $170.

Cost: $180 for an "owned license", $100 for a 1 year "leased license" - bulk discounts available
Recommended For: Larger, more-demanding communities

There is no shortage of other solutions. MyBB is one that is becoming more popular and PunBB is a fast, simple offering that appeals to those who can do without lots of functionality.

I want to start a crucial for me discussion, I'm in no doubt it will be beneficial for other ladies also After a long stage, I decided to quit the botox injections. I believe everybody knows why. As I am in need for somehow to switch the botox, with the intention to preserve my skin as lifted as possible, I've been asking for some other options. I've been instructed that there is this small instrument, which goes only with its particular consumatives, and the manufacturer says that this treatment not only preserves the skin stretched, but furthermore slows the process of aging. Influenced by what I've read, this apparatus is an alternative to botox, but I'd appreciate a lot, if you write me down if you have any familiarity with it. Is there a chance, that you know somebody who has ever treated him\herself with the galvanic machine and certainly the consequences? I'm looking for your commentary and recommendations.

Good day you all, I really must ask you smth really crucial! I have used botox for a very long time, and in the end, I took the decision to quit! Of course you know why. Because I must one way or another to switch the botox, as a way to preserve my face skin as stretched as possible, I've been requesting for alternatives. I've been told that there is this petite device, which goes only with its special gels, and the producer claims that this treatment not only maintains the skin stretched, but in addition slows the aging process. It sounds very good, but have you ever tried it? It actually seems to be a very good working machine, but I would like to know if any person of you has ever tried it? Perhaps you know somebody of your relatives and contacts, who has used it? I really thank you for your opinion.

Hallo, I need to ask you one issue please. My difficulty is, that I'm always traveling - because of my job. I've started anti cellulite types of treatments in a beauty health resort, but can't continue visiting at the same spa. Plus, I've been explained that if I don't do the procedures frequently, there will be no result. A colleagues of mine gave me some creams and especially designed soaps, but they are not effecting me. Could you please suggest me some other method that is tiny and that will help me? I know that usually the first-class products are expensive, but I'll do whatever thing to remove the cellulite as much as possible. Thanks you all.

eulogypros

If you have been handed the intimidating duty of writing a eulogy for your cherished one's funeral service, you will likely want to read an eulogy example or two. Actually, the faster you can get your hands on to review, the better ready you will be for establishing the suitable tone and theme for your personal cherished one's eulogy.

It is never easy to summarize an entire life and legacy in one single, heartfelt speech. But by reviewing an eulogy sample - pinpointing what truly speaks to you and ruling out what may not be as fitting inside your specific conditions - you will be sure to get the appropriate tone. Keep in mind the eulogy to be as unique because the dearly departed. Just only because some thing is included in an case you have study does not always mean that it should be incorporated in the funeral speech that you're composing. Give some thought as towards the type of service you are holding for your cherished one. Think about your cherished one's character, and the emotions of your fellow mourners. If the recently deceased was known for his pervasive sense of humor, perhaps a joke could be fitting. Otherwise, you might want to get some other's opinions on what aspects to get from any particularly touching instance you've read.

Oh my God, the new Captain America movie is coming out!!! I am so excited. It's been long overdue!! I wish it doesn't get sold out on the first day itself because my friends and I want to watch it. So what are your plans? I am even going to dress up like him.
The only thing I need is a shield but all the ones on ebay are crappy wooden ones. I found this - http://cgi.ebay.com/Marvels-Captain-America-Shield-Metal-30-Collectible-/230640562610?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35b33fb1b2 though. Hopefully, I win it.

*fingers crossed*
