Social network MySpace unveiled the first stage of its redesign yesterday, starting with a new look for the homepage.

Having been one of the more cluttered sites around, MySpace was certainly due for a revamp. So has it improved?

The main changes are a new simplified navigation bar, and a less cluttered homepage which is now easier on the eye.

Here's the old homepage for comparison:

The firm behind the redesign, Adaptive Path, has done a good job of removing the clutter from the homepage, and now users can see the content on display much more easily.

The number of links and adverts on the homepage has been reduced, and now it is much easier to navigate from this point.

The navigation bar has also been stripped down, with the number of links reduced from 15 to 7. Other options are now available via drop down menus.

The grey box which used to contain links to videos, featured profiles, horoscopes etc has now been replaced by a tabbed interface which is much more usable:

MySpace is a popular online destination for music fans, and this has been promoted on the homepage through the interface above, and also via this chart of the top ten artists of the day:

The redesign is a big improvement so far, but there is still plenty on the site to annoy all but the most dedicated MySpace users.

The profile pages are still as hellish and migraine-inducing as they ever were though.

Open a random profile page and you are assaulted by hideous flashing backgrounds, music that plays without asking you, embedded videos, while the whole thing can take an age to load:

At least MySpace has understood the need for usability improvements, and the parts of the redesign unveiled so far make the much easier to use and look at than before.

There are a lot more improvements which could be made to the user experience on the site, not playing music and video automatically for instance, and toning down some of the awful profile pages.

Of course, MySpace has to avoid annoying its users too much, so it will be interesting to see how far it can alter the rest of the site.

I have experienced more problems since your revamp than I did before. For example it will not let me change my mood or status. It will not allow me to post a new blog and in general it is very annoying. I feel that maybe you haven't quite gotten all the bugs out least I hope this is the problem. Another annoying little problem is each time I click on home I have to re-type my e-mail address and password even though I click on REMEMBER THIS. I am at I hope that this problem is soon resolved.

I have had problems since this change, all i get is 2 pictures on top the home page, no log in window to type my user name or password comes up at all. i havn been able to log in since the change.

From a user experience perspective, being a non MySpace user (and therefore in theory a potential new user looking to sign-up) I find the complete focus around promoting a wide mix of what MySpace is all about, compared to Facebook's homepage which is geared very much around promoting the benefits and reasons why a new user should sign up, as quite fascinating.

In some ways it reminds me of how Google approach designing their homepage interface, in stark contrast to the likes of AOL, Yahoo! and others, which are busy interfaces showing new visitors a wide variety of the services they offer.

I suppose it comes down to Facebook's confidence in their brand (which is backed up by the recent news from comScore that they have recently overtaken MySpace as the most visited social network) which means that new visitors are presented with the most minimal of a homepage user interface, focussing their mind specifically on what they (and Facebook) want - to sign up to the network.

Compare this to the main marketing area for new visitors on MySpace, which receives no real stand-out within the homepage user interface and is positioned very low down the page, and you can certainly see 2 comprehensively different 'new user' strategies from the 2 biggest social networks in the world.

I too have the very problem as Jeana mentioned above. all I get is 2 pictures on top the home page, no login window to type my user name or password comes up at all. I have gone into "sign up" and tried loggin in there and it still brings me back to the home page. My sons computer works just fine. We both use the same brouser so whats up with this crap????

I know like the new Mysapce 3.0 That new Myspace is not good at all nobody likes it 50% of Myspace users or more has deleted there Myspace and has moved on to Facebook. My opinion is that the new Myspace 3.0 is way more difficult then the new one because you have to follow each step correctly or else it might log you off. And the new name i meen its not even "MYSPACE" any more its "My__" Facebook on the other hand is more easy to get to one page to another. Yes the new Myspace is more organized but difficult to work with.
