Six months has passed since I chewed out 20+ revised social media stats, so I went back to see if there were any more changes. It turns out that there were, so I’m updating some of the more impressive ones...

Then and Now

Then: Facebook had more than 350 million active users on global basis.

Now: It’s anticipated that Facebook will announce that it has officially reached 500 million active users later this month 

Then: At least 175 million users log into Facebook every 24 hours, based upon the claims that 50% of active users log into the site each day.

Now: Although Facebook currently continues to cite the 50% benchmark, based upon the upcoming half-billion announcement, this means around 250 million people use the site on a daily basis.

Then: Twitter has 75 million user accounts, but only around 15 million are active users on a regular basis.

Now: At the recent Conversational Media Summit, the microblogging service claimed to now have 190 million users. 

Then: LinkedIn has 50 million members worldwide.

Now: The site has grown by around 40%, now with over 70 million users. 

Then: Wikipedia has in excess of 14 million articles

Now: In six months, another million individual pieces of content have been created. There are now more than 15 million articles on the site, with roughly a fifth of them written in English.

Then: More than 65 million users access Facebook through mobile-based devices.

Now: Mobile access has exploded. There are now more than 100 million active users currently accessing the site through mobile technology.

Then: There are more than 3.5 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, etc.) shared each week on Facebook.

Now: Facebook now cites that more than 25 billion pieces of content are shared each month. That’s over 5.5 billion each week.

Then: There are 11 million LinkedIn users across Europe.

Now: This has grown considerably. There are now 15 million LinkedIn users on the European continent.

Then: The average number of tweets per day was over 27.3 million.

Now: Twitter are now claiming that their users generate 65 million Tweets a day

New mind-blowing statistics

I also decided to take a look at the latest figures floating around the internet. The data I found is extremely impressive:


A new member joins LinkedIn approximately every second.

There are four million UK LinkedIn members

There were more than a billion people-searches through the site last year

Executives from all Fortune 500 companies are LinkedIn members

25% of FTSE 100 companies hire through LinkedIn

50% of Fortune 100 companies hire through LinkedIn

Over half a million LinkedIn groups exist


People spend over 500 billion minutes per month on Facebook

The average user is connected to 60 pages, groups and events

Every month, more than 70% of Facebook users engage with Platform applications

More than 550,000 active applications are currently on Facebook Platform

More than one million websites have integrated with the platform and over 150 million people engage with Facebook on external websites each month

There are more than 200 mobile operators in 60 countries working to deploy and promote Facebook mobile products


There are more than two billion views on YouTube each day

24 hours-worth of video content is uploaded every minute

46 years-worth of YouTube content is watched each day on Facebook

The average user spends a quarter of an hour each day on the site

70% of YouTube’s traffic comes from outside the USA

The site is monetising more than a billion video views each month

94 of AdAge’s 100 top advertisers have executed YouTube campaigns

The number of advertisers running display ads across YouTube has increased by around 1,000% in the last year


75% of Twitter traffic is generated from outside of

A quarter of Twitter users have no followers

65% of the world’s top 100 companies have a twitter account 

Twitter’s search engine gets more than 600 million queries a day. Monthly, this is proportionately more than Bing and Yahoo. 

There are more than 70,000 applications currently using Twitters API

Totally amazing figures! But its not so much the growth right now  we are witnessing, its the growth that will take place over the next year exponentially as the emerging economies grow and demographic groups who remain a little ignorant finally get more internactive and web savy. It's the most exciting industry ever, bar none!!

Thank you for the update. One social statistic that appears to be very hard to track down is the UK penetration of Foursquare. Lots of clients wanting to talk about it but hard to evaluate without some kind of insight into the number of UK users. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks
