45% of UK online consumers used click-and-collect for Christmas shopping

  • A new Econsultancy survey into Christmas shopping habits found that 45% of online consumers used reserve and collect over the Christmas period, which underlines the fact that retailers need to cater to customer demand for convenient delivery services.
  • The results show that click and collect is far more popular in the UK than in the US, as just 20% of consumers across the pond used the service over Christmas.

Two thirds of mobile media consumers use a second screen

  • A survey of 10,000 consumers in 13 countries by MEF found that in 2013 two thirds (65%) of mobile media users browsed the mobile internet in tandem with a second screen (TV, PC, tablet or second phone). 
  • When traditional media such as newspapers and radio are taken into consideration, the figure rises to nearly nine in ten (89%).
  • TV is the leading second screen for mobile users globally. In 11 of the 13 markets surveyed it tops the list with 35% watching television while they surf the web on their phone. TV is especially popular in the US and UK (55%), Mexico and Brazil (42%) and in South Africa (41%). 

Aussies want an app if they are to stay loyal

  • A new survey shows that a third (31%) of Australian loyalty scheme members want both a card and a mobile app.
  • A further 37% of respondents also said that they would consider paying for a loyalty program app, depending on the benefits.
  • The Share The Love research, published by The Loyalty Point, is based on a survey of 1,000 Australian loyalty program members.
  • Almost three-quarters (73%) of people are happy for their purchasing history to be tracked if it results in relevant offers or discounts from their existing loyalty scheme.

The rise of freelancers

  • A report from Elance shows that the top 10 skills supplied by UK freelancers are pretty much exclusively utilised in the service industries involved with the web and marketing.
  • They include article or content writing, translation, blogging or producing web content. For the full scoop check out Ben Davis' article on the rise of the freelancer.

Google+: just 35% of users are active

  • Google+ has achieved 1.15bn users, but only 35% of those use are active monthly.
  • These figures come from We Are Social, after analysing the growth trends for Google+ year on year, globally and locally.
  • Registered user numbers for Google+ have shown extraordinary growth between Q4 2012 and Q4 2013, rising from 359m users to 1.15bn.
  • However, the percentage of actual active users has been left far behind. Currently only 35% of registered users are active on a monthly basis.

Attitudes to UX testing

  • A survey of more than 1,300 UX, marketing, and product professionals by UserTesting.com has found that 55% say usability testing budget increased in 2013, with 42% putting it down to a 'change in attitude towards usability testing'.
  • A further 60% said testing frequency increased in 2013 and 41% have a dedicated team for usability testing.

Facebook TV engagement

  • A new report suggests that Facebook may also be a popular talking shop for TV shows, with up to a quarter of the television audience posting content related to the show they are watching on Facebook.
  • A minute-by-minute breakdown of aggregated TV-related Facebook interactions shows that the majority of activity happens during the show and there are peaks of activity that map directly to key events in the telecast.

The importance of tablet optimisation

  • A poor tablet shopping experience is likely to damage brand perception and reduce instances of customer recommendation, according to a white paper released by Usablenet.
  • The report shows that more than three quarters of consumers say a dissatisfying shopping experience using a tablet would impact their opinion of a brand. Furthermore, 67% of shoppers stated that it would make them reluctant to recommend the retailer to family and friends.
  • Almost half (46%) of UK tablet owners use them most often at home while watching the television rather than using them when out and about. 

Efficient delivery will leave people fulfilled

  • A report from comScore and UPS has revealed that online shoppers in Europe and around the world are looking for more control over their shipping and delivery experiences. 
  • The study includes data from more than 14,000 frequent online shoppers across six countries in Europe, as well as the US, Canada, Asia, Australia and Mexico.
  • According to the report, roughly three quarters of respondents in Europe (76%) are satisfied with the online shopping experience. This is compared to 83% of shoppers in the US, while consumers in the Asia Pacific are least satisfied at only 50%. 
  • Two areas that scored relatively high for satisfaction in Europe were having websites available in the local or preferred language (73%) and international payment and delivery options (63%).
