TV monitoring service SnapStream has made its software available to Mac users, potentially opening up a huge new marketplace among media agencies.

Its new web-based video player and Mac client allows users to search, record and clip recorded TV shows.

SnapStream markets itself at a range of industries, including government agencies, universities and TV broadcasters – but it doesn’t come cheap, with prices starting at $1,000 per month.

The new web-based model could allow the company to gain new clients and improve usability for its existing customer base.

Previously only available on Windows machines, it can now be used on Mozilla Firefox 8, IE8 and Chrome - and on Mac OSX Snow Leopard.

SnapStream’s hardware connects to a standard digital set-top box, and as more content is made available through connected TVs, its technology will gain access to a much wider library of material.

At the moment the technology only works on programmes from 'traditional' broadcasters, as its system uses TV schedules to search. Presumably though, it won’t be long before SnapStream moves to take advantage of the connected TV market.

Plus, by adding Mac capability, SnapStream is making sure it has the widest possible marketplace for its record and clip software.

The television monitoring space has also recently been enetered by Shazam, largely known for its music tagging properties in the UK.

The company is now able to do the same for advertisements and television shows, with home baking brand Pillsbury launching an interactive TV campaign in the US using Shazam's app in December of last year.
