Google shifts in to offline web gear

Google is attempting to bridge the divide between online and offline working by releasing new software that syncronises the two.

At its Developer Day in Sydney today, the company announced Google Gears, an open-source technology platform that allows programmers to build websites that continue to function even without connectivity.


Yahoo! shows biggest UK search share gains

Yahoo! has been the biggest winner among search engines in gaining market share over the last year, according to new statistics.

The Sunnyvale, California, search site's share increased 13% here in the UK, taking it up to 8.6%, Hitwise reported.


Two thirds of employees use social nets for business

Two thirds of business professionals (65%) use social networking websites to help them make professional connections, new research has found.

Despite the likes of MySpace, Bebo and Facebook enjoying a reputation for popularity and frivolity among teenagers and students, the US Institute for Corporate Productivity found 65% of business people use such tools.


US newspaper online ad revenues increase

The Newspaper Association of America is reporting that newspaper sites have seen their ad revenues increase for the 12th quarter in a row.

Online ad revenues for US newspaper sites totalled $750m (£380m) for Q1 2007, an increase of 22.3% on the same period in 2006. In the same period, print ad spending fell by 6.4%.


Amazon to take adverts on UK site

Amazon is to let companies place ads on its UK website for the first time.

Advertising network eType will handle the backend for what will be a significant foray in to the ad space, according to Media Week.

CBS buys London-based for $280m

Web radio service has been snapped up by CBS in a $280m (£142m) deal, which is the largest ever UK Web 2.0 acquisition.

The move follows ongoing rumours that would be acquired, but Viacom was believed to have been the likely buyer, and at a much higher price of $450m (£226m).

A survey has revealed that women have different attitudes to search giant Google from men, and are less likely to criticise it for being too commercial.

In a survey of 1,000 UK internet users by search agency bigmouthmedia, less than a third thought that Google was becoming too commercial.

Online shoppers want more information

Providing customers with plenty of information during the buying process can help convert more browsers to buyers, according to a new survey of US web users.

Harris Interactive's Online Retail Report (pdf) surveyed 2,873 US adults, finding that 48% of respondents have increased their online shopping habits.
