Ben Davis
I've taken every Econsultancy blog post title from 2014 and 2015 and created word clouds with them.

This is a very unscientific experiment, but not necessarily a meaningless one. Either way, it was fun.

Though the resulting pictures may reveal more about the Econsultancy writers than the state of the industry, there are a few points of interest.

tag:econsultancy.com,2008:BlogPost/65901 2014-12-15T13:34:00+00:00 2014-12-15T13:34:00+00:00 The top 20 fail-iest social media fails of 2014 Matt Owen
Because all websites are contractually obliged to write this article every year...

tag:econsultancy.com,2008:BlogPost/64132 2014-01-15T14:03:00+00:00 2014-01-15T14:03:00+00:00 Digital marketing and ecommerce trends for 2014 by Econsultancy CEO Ashley Friedlein Ashley Friedlein
Each year I try to give my personal thoughts on what will be interesting and important in the world of digital marketing and ecommerce for the year ahead.

These are somewhere between trends and predictions. They are based largely on the many conversations I have with industry influencers and practitioners.

Following are just a selection of 10 trends that I've chosen to highlight. However, there is free report to download and share which is over 40 pages long and covers all of my trends and predictions for 2014 across the 10 core digital topics that Econsultancy cover.

tag:econsultancy.com,2008:BlogPost/64096 2014-01-13T13:00:00+00:00 2014-01-13T13:00:00+00:00 18 pivotal web design trends for 2014 Chris Lake
What web design trends do you think we'll see in 2014? I'm betting on more simplicity, more cleanliness, and more focus on smaller screen sizes, among other things.

This collection is largely based on observation, vaguely educated guesswork, waving a finger in the air, and a bunch of other posts I've compiled in recent months. As such, some of these predictions may be more accurate than others!

No doubt I have missed all manner of trends, so do share your own thoughts and predictions in the comments section below.

tag:econsultancy.com,2008:BlogPost/64094 2014-01-08T16:43:00+00:00 2014-01-08T16:43:00+00:00 CES 2014 product launch roundup: Yahoo, wearables, Dual OS Ben Davis
The Consumer Electronics Show is big business. It runs in January each year, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, one of the sprawling venues for which Google provides Indoor Maps.

If you’ve never heard of CES, it’s where tons of new tech is debuted, from new tablets to robotics, new games to 3D printing.

Incidentally, CES has an interesting history that goes back to 1967. It was the place that technology such as the VCR first saw the light of day.

In the ‘90s, CES used to coincide with the AVN Adult Video awards; you must read a wonderful essay by David Foster Wallace, with lots of fascinating insight into both shows (the most popular venue at CES for a number of years was the Adult Software exhibition, but thankfully things have moved on since then, tech is even bigger business and attracts less of these crazy sideshows).

Anyway, I digress; let’s have a rundown of CES 2014 interesting product launches so far that might just affect the world of digital and marketing.

tag:econsultancy.com,2008:BlogPost/64078 2014-01-07T18:09:00+00:00 2014-01-07T18:09:00+00:00 2014 predictions from the New York tech community Jacob Ajwani
2013 turned out to be a monumental year for ecommerce.

Twitter, Rocket Fuel and Criteo IPOed. Online sales closed at record highs, with more and more transactions taking place by consumers on smartphones and tablets.

Overstock.com committed to become one of the early adaptors of Bitcoin as a method of payment. And in an economy traditionally dominated by finance and real estate, tech has become New York City’s second largest sector, cementing its status as Silicon Alley.

So what’s new for 2014? I asked my friends in New York’s digital community to share their predictions of how the marketers’ world may be affected as it relates to global ecommerce trends, mobile’s continued prowess, and emerging acquisition strategies. Here’s what they had to say.

tag:econsultancy.com,2008:BlogPost/64051 2014-01-02T10:26:00+00:00 2014-01-02T10:26:00+00:00 Digital marketing and the music industry: six key trends for 2014 Marcus Taylor
One of the interesting things about being a digital marketer that specialises in a certain niche is that you get to understand your niche from many different angles.

Over the past 12 months I’ve talked to hundreds of music companies; understanding what works, what doesn’t, and where they think their corner of the industry is going.

Here’s my summary of what I think will matter when it comes to digital marketing in the music industry in 2014.

tag:econsultancy.com,2008:BlogPost/64013 2013-12-17T14:20:00+00:00 2013-12-17T14:20:00+00:00 The digital marketing year in quotes Ben Davis
As always, there was lots of comment-worthy developments in the world of digital marketing this year.

Here's my summation of 2013 in quotes, from changes at Google, to acquisitions and mergers, and developments across social networks.

Got other quotes worthy of inclusion? It isn’t.

The new FIFA app, created by Monitise Create, is reviewed very favourably in the app store, with users unanimous in giving the app five stars.

I must say, I quite agree. The UX is basically flawless, and information is presented elegantly and simply. The imagery, the formatting, the type, the transitions, the icons; it’s all pretty.

It compares very favourably with (is better than) other ‘match centre’ apps such as Sky Sports, but offers lots of other content, too, notably news, World Cup content, FIFA rankings and interactive games.

With the app tipped to become the most popular sports app download, I thought I’d put it through its paces. Take a look at my review of one of the most beautifully designed apps I’ve used in ages.
