Why brands should be bothered about (voice)bots

Let me start off with a disclaimer.

I am not a voice technology expert, conversational designer or even adept in the area of Alexa skills. This piece is written from a marketing perspective and will I hope, have relevance for marketeers wanting to know more about opportunities in this area.

An introduction to AI-powered ecommerce merchandising

Amazon has been using algorithms to try to sell you extra stuff for years.

But the technology to personalise merchandising, much further than recommendations, is advancing rapidly across ecommerce.

Companies such as Sentient and Apptus and their AI-powered systems are changing site search functionality, product lists, facets and more, to try to generate more sales.

Machines: "I think what the marketers meant to say..."

There is a Bill Hicks joke about Evangelical Christians. You can watch it here, but it goes as follows:

"They believe the Bible is the exact word of God. Then they change the bible! Pretty presumptuous, hu huh?"

[In character] "I think what God meant to say..."

The case for chatbots being the new apps - notes from #WebSummit2016

“Bots are the new apps” according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in a keynote given at a Microsoft developer conference in March 2016.

On the basis of the amount of start-ups working on bot related activities at Web Summit 2016, it would seem as if bots may be about to become mainstream after all.

Artificial intelligence has many uses in marketing.

This year the level of interest in AI has bumped up a notch, partly due to press coverage of Microsoft's Tay, Google Photos, and IBM's Watson (the list goes on).

With many software-as-a-service companies acquiring or developing AI, I thought I'd round up some examples.

Could AI kill off the conversion optimisation consultant?

I have written a little bit about artifical intelligence in recent months. Enough to improve my superficial knowledge of its application in marketing.

What seems obvious is that much like most martech, AI will not endanger many jobs in the medium term. It merely creates more sophistication and more jobs, perhaps.

All the digital news stories you missed this week

This week's tinder box of digital news has included Shakespeare, Slack, AI (as usual), Vine, a humongous acquisition and Donald Trump (as usual).

Why not read it while eating some seasonally-appropriate porridge with a topping of your choice?
