An ad campaign doesn’t always go viral, but when it does…

It's very rare that an ad campaign truly goes viral. But when it does it becomes part of our language, its slogan is repeated by people way beyond the commercials, and the bounce for the brand can be huge.

To give some inspiration for your next effort, here are a few noteworthy examples from the United States.

Are car rental websites being upfront about costs?

We know that consumers object to hidden charges when buying from e-commerce sites, but car rental firms are still doing this. The difference here being that the hidden charges occur offline. 

Having had a nasty surprise after seeing the extra car hire charges from Avis on my credit card bill, I've been looking at several car hire sites to see how upfront they are being about extra costs. 

I found several areas where they could be more upfront, and improve their customer retention rates by ensuring that customers don't receive any nasty surprises when they see the bill.

How Avis turns search into onsite conversion

The Avis Budget Group runs two of the largest brands in the car rental business. Between the two there are 120 million rental days from 10,000 locations. This accounts for 28 million transactions and seven billion in annual revenue.

John Peebles, VP of Marketing Strategy and Innovation, gave a little insight into how the company looks at attribution, branding and how it can respond to customers to drive conversion.
