Exclusive offers and in-app purchasing most important features for mobile apps: report

Back in the early days of mobile commerce there was frequent debate over whether businesses should opt for a mobile site or a mobile app.

Fortunately most businesses and marketers now realise that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach and that the two platforms aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive.

However we do occasionally still see businesses launching apps without properly considering the functionality that will be most appealing and useful to their customers.

Data from our new Mobile Commerce Compendium shows that, more than anything else, consumers want to be rewarded with exclusive offers if they download a retail app, with 38% of respondents selecting this as an important feature for smartphone apps.

Tesco unveils interactive digital grocery store at Gatwick Airport

Tesco has unveiled new interactive digital billboards in the departure lounge at Gatwick Airport that allow consumers to order groceries to be delivered to them when they return from holiday.

Using Tesco’s iPhone and Android smartphone apps holidaymakers can add products to their shopping basket by scanning the barcodes displayed under the items on the adverts.

Sliding screens on each ‘fridge’ can be scrolled by hand allowing customers to browse and select around 80 of Tesco’s most popular products.

Deliveries can then be scheduled for up to three weeks in advance to coincide with the user's return home.

The use of interactive billboards in the UK follows a successful trial in South Korea’s subway. Commuters were able to purchase items from a virtual shopping aisle by scanning QR codes with their smartphone.

Debenhams rolls out free wi-fi in its stores

Debenhams announced today that it will be providing free wi-fi in partnership with O2, in all of its 167 stores. 

The wi-fi coverage will allow customers to access information about products, view reviews, order out of stock items, and receive discount vouchers straight to their mobiles. 

This is a smart move from Debenhams, and one which addresses the threat of mobile use in store and turns it to the retailer's advantage.

Debenhams reaches £1m in sales through its iPhone app

Statistics from Debenhams provide further evidence of the value of mobile commerce to retailers, with its iPhone app bringing in £1m in sales in five months. 

Following the early success of the iPhone app, Debenhams is now releasing apps for Android and Nokia devices.
