International e-commerce: retailers need to improve on delivery

While there is potential for the UK's online retailers to grow their sales internationally, many are not doing enough to appeal to customers outside the UK.

Snow Valley's International Delivery Report, sponsored by Royal Mail, finds that many UK etailers are simply not offering overseas delivery, while of those that do, there are many issues around delivery information, charges and timescales.

Only 7% of Europeans shop online across borders

Despite the potential for growth in e-commerce in Europe, just 21% of online retailers are selling in other EC member states, and just 7% of people shop online across borders.

These are some of the findings of a European Commission survey, which were presented by Maglena Kuneva, the European commissioner for consumer affairs. He identifies language, regulatory barriers to business, as well as consumer trust issues, as some of the barriers to cross border e-commerce.

Site review: The Book Depository

UK online book retailer Book Depository launched a new version of its site recently, aiming to make it 'best in class, in e-commerce terms'.

It's a pureplay e-tailer, and has certainly been performing well recently, with sales of more than £40m in the last twelve months, an impressive 160% increase on the previous year, and enough to make the Sunday Times' Fast Track 100 list.

I've been taking a closer look at the site...
