Why was Dixon's response to its website crash so anti-social?

Visitors to Dixons’ website were greeted with an error message on Monday after the site went offline due to increased traffic volume during its annual sale.

Or at least that’s what the error message said.

However Currys and PC World, which are both owned by Dixons Retail Group, also went offline with a spokesman quoted as saying the outage was caused by fibre damage during roadworks.

Dixons' website crashes due to sales traffic

Dixons’ annual sale got off to a bad start this morning when the website went offline due to a “high volume of visitors.”

One of the main aims of a sale is to drive increased volumes of traffic, so the outage suggests that Dixons failed to properly test and prepare its systems in the run up to the event.

And it’s not like the electronics retailer hasn’t had prior warning of this type of issue from other online retailers.

Q&A: Rovi's David Jordan on the future of digital entertainment

At Mobile World Congress this year, digital entertainment specialist Rovi announced a partnership with Dixons Retail that would see the British company use its technology to power an "over the top movie service" called KNOWHOW Movies.

But Rovi has fingers in many pies, from entertainment discovery, to distribution and advertising.

We sat down with David Jordan, Rovi's VP of Marketing to talk about developments in this space, the opportunity for marketers and what it means for consumers.

First the public service: Here's how to find stores with iPads or ipad stock levels (note the careful use of anchor text to help Google understand the linked to pages are relevant to those words).

DSGi sites take the day off

Three of DSGi's major UK e-commerce sites were down for maintenance for a large part of the day yesterday, with Currys, PC World and Dixons all displaying error messages for visitors.

The retail group is expected to report disappointing like-for-like sales figures this week, and can ill-afford the loss of a day's online trading in such economic circumstances.
