Black Friday

All the stats you need from Black Friday & Cyber Monday 2014

I solemnly swear that this is (probably) the last Black Friday/Cyber Monday post we’re going to write this year.

We’ve potentially been guilty of overdoing it, but then when the whole ecommerce world goes mad for a sales event it's hard to avoid getting swept up in the hoopla.

Google's search market share drops below 90% for second month in a row

UK internet users made 2.7bn visits to search engines in December 2012, an increase of 400m visits compared to December 2011.

This represents a 17% increase year-on-year, and confirms that it was a particularly strong Christmas period for search.

Interestingly, the data from Experian Hitwise also shows that Google’s market share dropped below 90% for the second month in a row to 88%; its lowest point for five years.

Boxing Day was the busiest day ever for ecommerce in the UK: report

Christmas is traditionally a time when we meet up with our families to share gifts and overindulge on food and drink.

But new data shows it’s also increasingly becoming a time to go online and indulge in some retail therapy.

Stats from Experian Hitwise show that Christmas 2012 was the busiest ever for online retailers in the UK, with consumers making 84m visits to retail websites on Christmas Eve and 107m visits on Christmas Day.

This is an increase of 86% and 71% respectively compared to 2011.

Amazon came out on top in the battle of the retailers, leapfrogging eBay to become the most visited ecommerce site on Christmas Day with more than 12% of all visits.

Publishers see surge in traffic as consumers search for 'iPad 3'

Apple’s rumoured iPad 3 launch has had an unlikely knock-on effect as consumers search for news ahead of the official press event later today.

Data from Experian Hitwise shows that TechRadar recieved the most traffic (7.25%) from the search term ‘Apple iPad 3’ last week, followed by Crave from CNET at 4.22%.

Surprisingly, the Daily Mail came third, despite the fact that it is not generally associated with technology reporting, then followed by Computer World and BBC News.

Search engines attract 2.3bn UK visits in January

Visits to search engines in the UK increased to 2.3bn in January 2012 compared to 2.2bn in the same period in 2011, according to data from Experian Hitwise.

The additional 100m visits equates to a yearly increase of 4.5%.

Google still dominates the market with 90.64% of all UK searches conducted in January, slightly down on December's tally of 91.75% but up 0.27% annually.

MySpace's decline sees StumbleUpon move into top 10 social networks

StumbleUpon broke into the top 10 of the most visited social networking sites this past November, exceeding MySpace for the first time ever.

This is the first time MySpace has failed to rank in the top 10 social networking sites, according to the stats compiled by Experian Hitwise.

Experian analyst James Murray said StumbleUpon owes its top 10 position to MySpace’s continuing decline rather than a boost in its own traffic.
