A brief history of ad blocking shows it’s not a new problem

The history of ad blocking is a virtual time machine of America’s inventors and their entrepreneurial spirit.

It’s lineage may date back as far as 1928, inspired by two American cousins named Edward M. Knabish and Edwin J. Shoemaker, who partnered in a small furniture business located in Monroe, Michigan.

How to make a controversial infographic: case study

Creating and promoting an infographic, it’s a tried-and-tested technique that’s planned for all sorts of reasons.

But successfully getting visual content out there, online, can be more complicated than it seems.

This week's finest digital marketing infographic

Here it is ladies and gentlemen, this week’s very finest digital marketing infographic.

This time it’s a stat fest from Invesp looking at US online retail sales data and trends but with a few global stats thrown in for good measure.

It shows that global ecommerce trends topped $1 trillion for the first time in 2012, with the Asia-Pacific region estimated to make up a third of worldwide online sales this year.

This is predicted to grow to almost 40% by 2016, while North America’s share of online sales will drop from 31.5% to 28.2%.

This week's finest digital marketing infographic

This week's infographic, brought to you by silktide, is a great example of how to make a good infographic. It's clear and piquant.

Perhaps a controversial choice, though. The topic is the EU Cookie Law, and there's certainly a leading opinion in here somewhere (maybe even a hint of invective - we don't quite condone the jibe at octogenarians).

I think most would agree that, though there may be the germ of a decent idea somewhere in this legislation, its execution has left much to be desired.

This week's finest digital marketing infographic

It’s Friday and that means it’s time for us to trawl our inboxes to pluck out the finest infographic we’ve seen this week.

This time around the winner is Monetate with a graphic that looks at traveller preferences to determine the best times during the booking process to offer upsells and cross-sells.

For example, 45% of people who book hotels online say that they'd prefer to receive ancillary offers after choosing their hotel, but prior to booking.

Ecommerce plays a major role in allowing consumers to both research and make travel purchases, with as much as 75% of holiday planning taking place online.

New research from JiWire also shows that consumers are increasingly using mobile devices for their travel research, as 56% of consumers use their laptop to research travel options, compared to 49% on tablet and 48% on smartphone.

This week's finest digital marketing infographic

It’s that time again when we present the finest digital marketing infographic we’ve seen this week and I’m pleased to say that this time round the winner is a friend of mine.

This infographic was created by our very own Matt Owen to summarise some of the findings from the new Econsultancy/Adobe Quarterly Digital Intelligence Briefing titled ‘From Content Management to Customer Experience Management’.

The report, based on a global survey of more than 1,000 respondents, is devoted to the topic of web content management (WCM), an area which is becoming a focal point for companies wishing to deliver a truly seamless multichannel customer experience.

How B2B content can make you popular

Lately it seems like content marketing is all people are talking about. B2B marketers however, don’t always see themselves as getting a slice of that pie.

It’s true that B2B content marketing has unique challenges: it can be hard to get a conversation started (let alone shared) by business customers or to create viral appeal (usually pathos-driven human interest angles).

But just because you're B2B doesn't mean you can't be one of the cool kids.

This week's finest digital marketing infographic

It’s that time again where we present the week’s finest digital marketing infographic.

This time it comes from Quick Sprout and looks at optimising contact forms for conversions. Admittedly the colour scheme is quite bland, but the quality of the information elevates it above the others I’ve seen this week.

It includes stats on the optimum number of fields per form and the kind of personal information you should avoid asking for.

To find out more on this topic read our blog post detailing three case studies about optimising lead generation forms or check out our Conversion Rate Optimisation Guide.

This week's finest digital marketing infographic

Regular readers of the Econsultancy blog will be used to seeing our ‘top six infographics’ roundup each Friday, but it is my sad duty to report that it has been discontinued.

The reason for the post’s demise is down to the fact that quality infographics have become increasingly thin on the ground, so finding six each week was a difficult task.

But fear not, because though the ‘top six’ post is gone, in its place we’ll now publish the best infographic of the week every Friday. Unless we only get rubbish infographics, in which case we won’t bother to publish any at all.

This week's top six infographics

Once again we round up six of the best infographics we've seen this week.

The topics include mobile trends in emerging markets, social influencers, the mobile landscape, 4G's impact on retail, and stats on bring your own device.

UK's online gambling sector worth £2bn in 2012: stats

Sports, and especially 'in-play', betting is leading the growth in the UK's online gambling market, with the sector worth more than £2bn in 2012.

For example, football betting has grown by 69% during 2011 to 2012, making it the second most lucrative, after horse racing.

Stickeyes has released a report on the sector, which looks at the top 50 keywords driving online search, and which brands are cleaning up.

Here are a few highlights from the study...
