Econsultancy's third annual Cross-Channel Marketing Report has found that two-thirds of responding companies (67%) agree their priority is for "all key marketing activities to be integrated across channels."
The report, published in partnership with Oracle Marketing Cloud, is based on a survey of 956 marketers and assesses how businesses are progressing with cross-channel strategies.
This survey aims to explore the level of integration between different digital channels and use of relationship marketing.
Email marketing has a reputation of being a boring direct response channel, always on the verge of “death” at the hands of the latest digital touch point, which gets heralded as the “future of messaging”.
Yet email trudges on, consistently ranking at the highest level for ROI. Despite the death threats, companies are attributing 23% of their total sales to email, up from 18% in 2013.
In the face of newer digital channels, email has thrived in its role as the unassuming, reliable touch point for marketers to engage with customers.
So how will the elder statesman of digital marketing change in a continuously evolving digital ecosystem?
Here are a number of ways marketers think email will be used in the near future and beyond.
Integration of tech platforms and software is vital if ecommerce companies want to be able to run an efficient business and provide an excellent customer experience.
But despite the obvious need for successfully joining up ecommerce with other parts of the business, it would appear that most are struggling in this area.
A new report from Econsultancy, in partnership with Neoworks, has found that integration with current/legacy systems remains the biggest challenge when expanding an ecommerce business, cited by 43% of company respondents and 39% of supply-side respondents as one of the three biggest barriers to success.
Companies are reporting the underperformance of ecommerce solutions in critical areas of functionality such as site search, product management, SEO and mobile-supported commerce.
These deficiencies, coupled with difficulties with integration, have led many merchants to replatform, according to Econsultancy’s first survey-based Technology for Ecommerce Report.
The reports, carried out in association with Neoworks, shows that only a minority of respondents say their technology performs well across each of the key functionality requirements.

Fully integrating channels in a customer marketing program or campaign is not easy.
In fact, the recent Econsultancy/ CACI Integrated Customer Experience report showed that despite 90% of companies wanting to integrate across channel, only 20% actually have a well-developed strategy.
Even when there is a strategy, implementing it is a process laden with obstacles. The most common problem for businesses is the complexity of a customer's interaction across multiple channels, departments and systems.
Related to this issue is the fact that multiple departments need to be aligned on planning and change activities required. This cross-departmental responsibility creates resource allocation and control issues.
